Dr. Tim T - Cardiothoracic Surgeon
I first went to see Dr. Wong almost 25 years ago because of hypertension and my family history of heart disease. My father had his first heart attack at age 58. Though testing clearly shows plaque in my arteries, with lifestyle changes, medication and close monitoring, I have never had a heart attack or stroke. I credit Dr. Mike Wong for helping me achieve the cardiovascular health to recently celebrate my 80th birthday.

People may think that women are not at great risk for heart disease but with my family history, I was a prime candidate.
When I was in my late 50's, I was exercising and experienced fatigue and shortness of breath. Although I had recently seen another cardiologist for evaluation, I called upon Dr. Wong as a family friend. He reviewed my records and urged me to check into the hospital immediately for more analysis and treatment because my records revealed my heart was under great stress. I had severely blocked arteries and required an angioplasty and 3 stents.
After the surgery, I continued as Dr. Wong's patient and over the next 4 years, I lost 10 pounds, cut my bad cholesterol in half, nearly doubled my good cholesterol, and my CRP (a marker for inflammation) went from high to normal. I still do love to eat and cook, so Dr. Wong reminds me to stay vigilant. I am grateful for his expertise and consistent care.

I decided to have a heart scan when I was only 38 years old due to my family history of strokes and heart attacks. The radiologist said my heart scan showed dangerous levels of calcified plaque blocking my arteries and he referred me to HeartCare. Dr. Wong administered blood tests and explained that my good cholesterol (HDL) was too low. The HeartCare staff helped me with dietary and other counseling. I see the results in my lab work and have learned to like the healthy dietary choices I am now making: lean protein, fish, and complex carbohydrates. I now see Dr.Wong several times a year. I have experienced a dramatic difference in my blood chemistry -my HDL has doubled - and I have had no events to report over the years.

The most amazing thing to me is that I had absolutely no symptoms: no chest pain, no shortness of breath, nothing, yet my cholesterol levels were out of sight! I had previously been diagnosed with diabetes, so my primary care physician referred me to HeartCare. When a treadmill test revealed my arteries had narrowed, Dr. Wong sent me to get an angiogram that confirmed blockage in three arteries. I required triple bypass surgery.
Dr. Wong put me on medications and made changes in my diet. Before treatment, my total cholesterol was 669, my triglycerides were 484. My numbers are now approaching normal with my total cholesterol at 178, and my triglycerides at 252.

My adventure began with a helicopter ride to Cedars-Sinai. I suffered from severe chest pain while hiking, and could not continue. It turned out I had three diseased vessels and required a stent and an angioplasty (a balloon inserted to open up the arteries) My physical therapist referred me to Dr. Wong.
Dr. Wong analyzed my blood and explained I had very low HDL (good cholesterol), high LDL (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides and elevated insulin levels: a dangerous combination. He said to stop taking Vitamins C and E because they were suppressing my good HDL. He prescribed medications to control my lipid (blood) abnormalities and recommended changes to my diet. In just six months, my HDL level increased, and my LDL level, triglycerides and insulin levels lowered. I now visit Dr. Wong about three times a year to keep me on track. I am confident that his diagnosis and treatment have been effective in maintaining my good health.
